Our Territory
South Eastern Sicily
The “Ragusa area” represents 80% of the total carob production in Italy.
Ragusa has been included in the "Unesco Heritage" list in 2002.
Agriculture is at the heart of the local economy, and it still represents a leading field for the other industrial and tourist sectors. The city of Ragusa stands out for its cultural and historical interest: there are many baroque monuments among which the best examples are the city Cathedral and St George's Cathedral in the baroque centre of Ibla.
The territory is characterized by a great variability in altitudes with a generally hilly appearance. The temperature rarely falls below 0° C in the winter months while in the summer it often climbs above 40°C in the shade. During the winter, winds come from the north of which the tramontana is the most typical; in the spring and summer the scirocco winds arrive from the south greatly raising the temperatures.
The carob tree strongly characterizes the skyline of this Mediterranean district.
The trees, some of them hundreds of years old, flower in October
and November, and the pods are collected from August to October.
